The vintage California throwback style of Volkswagen’s minibus is making a comeback in a big way.
The bus, named ”I.D. Buzz”, which made its debut at the Detroit auto show this past January, is revving up excitement among automobile collectors and fans, as photos of its new futuristic design are being leaked on the internet.
In commenting on the microbus’ revamped concept, Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management for Volkswagen said:
“Our goal is clear: we want to make the fully electric, fully connected car a bestseller around the world. The iconic car of the electric age must be a Volkswagen.”
The microbus was designed with autonomous features, including a 270 mile-range on its battery pack and electric motors at the front and rear axles. Family friendly features are also built into its design, with a driver seat that can swivel around for group activities and a middle row fold-up feature that creates ample cargo room.
Volkswagen lovers, who pushed the urge for this ‘60s microbus comeback, will have to wait until 2022 to hit the beach in this road trip companion. Paying homage to the history of the classic model, the 2022 microbus version will be built in the VW plant in Hanover, Germany, where all earlier generations were assembled.
Volkswagen announced also this past year that their entire fleet of ID models will be autonomous by 2025. That’s definitely good news for VW lovers all over the world.
